Seven and a half million women were moved around Britain to work in factories and the forces during the war. At that time, traditionally, it was men who went out to work, while most women stayed at home and looked after the house and their children, so for many women the war was the first opportunity they had to go out to work.
They did all sorts of different jobs, many stood in for the men that had gone away to war: in factories - making weapons and aeroplanes - the Women's Land Army worked on farms and in the countryside - The Women's Voluntary Service was run mostly by older women and provided food, shelter and information for people who had lost their homes due to the war
