Upton Court
(Grade II* Listing)
Location: Upton Court Road (south side)
Upton Court was the house of the manor of Upton in the 1600s. Few if any of the Lords of the Manor lived in it. It was leased to tenants.
In 1711 Benjamin Lane conveyed it to Edward Lascelles and his heirs. His grandson was created Lord Harewood in 1796 and the property remained in that family for over a century.
The property was then sold and privately owned until in 1952 it was bought by Mr Francis Groves of Groves Brodie and Co. Ltd. Following the death of Francis Groves in 1986, Upton Court was purchased by the Berkshire and Buckinghamshire Observer.
This came about by Mr Frank Lawrance, a journalist, who had come to Slough in 1923 and worked for Francis Groves and so began the association of Frank Lawrance with the Observer Newspaper and Upton Court.
