This inn is said to be the oldest in in the country and
possibly the site of a grizzly murder of a wealthy clothier. However
few records have survived to support the theories.
The Inn was also reputed to be a bolt hole for the highwayman Dick
Turpin, who would make his escape via a passage which tunnelled under
the road.
The building is a timber framed building dating from the sixteenth
century, with a tiled roof.
In the Jacobean room is a life size stuffed ostrich which is names
Esmeralda.
The hardware shop next to The Ostrich occupies the oldest house in
Colnbrook.
