Everyone was encouraged to save and economise - to save money and materials that could be used to help fight the war. National and Local schemes organised the collection of bags, bottles, paper and metal to recycle. Slough even had its own 'Salvage Kid' to encourage everyone to take part in sorting through their rubbish.
The Salvage Kid (pictured as
a detail below) was a local boy who was dressed up in all sorts of
re-usable rubbing in order to spread the message of recycling to the
people of Slough.
How many different types of rubbish can you see he is wearing?
Across the country people
were appointed as Salvage Stewards to collect re-usable material and in
certain places 'Salvage Weeks' were organised. Posters and leaflets
encouraging people to 'salvage' would have been seen all over the
place.
