Hawker Hurricanes at Langley

In 1936 Hawker Aircraft Ltd bought a piece of land at Langley, Slough, to build an airfield and factory. The factory was finished by the end of 1938 and was already producing Hurricane aircraft at the rate of one per day!

At its peak in 1942, five aircraft were being produced per day!! One Hurricane was kept on site to defend the factory but it was never needed.

Surprisingly very few bombs fell on or near the factory during the war. Hawker Aircraft Ltd made other aircraft too at Langley - the Typhoon, the Tempest, the Fury and the Sea Fury.

Stella Winterson remembers the airmen of the Second World War

"My eldest brother who was 10 years older than me worked at Hawker Sidley on Slough Trading Estate. He was a mechanic so he worked on the engines. The pilots were young & they were handsome and they were young, they were very young "
