Dig for Victory

To make sure that British people had enough to eat during the war time and to add to the rationed food, people were encouraged to keep an allotment to grow fresh fruit and vegetables.

The campaign was called 'Dig for Victory' and over 10 million propaganda leaflets were distributed to British people. It was a successful campaign and it is estimated that over 1,400,000 British people had allotments.

Gardens, parks, lawns and flower-beds were turned into vegetable plots as part of the Dig for Victory campaign. People were encouraged to keep chickens, for laying eggs. Others kept rabbits and goats. Animals were fed on waste food scraps, and pigs were especially popular as they would eat nearly anything!
